At a glance

A shared wardrobe works best when each person has a clearly allocated daily zone. Count and measure the contents first, then divide hanging, shelves and drawers according to actual use rather than equal-looking doors.

Two identical wardrobe compartments do not necessarily create a fair or useful arrangement. One person may need long hanging space while another needs drawers for folded clothing. In a Dubai apartment, where existing wardrobes often shape the bedroom layout, a careful interior plan can improve daily access without changing the whole room.

Audit what goes inside

Sort clothing into long hanging, short hanging, folded items, accessories and occasional belongings. Measure representative items on their usual hangers. Include shoes, bags and luggage only if the wardrobe is genuinely their intended home.

Remove assumptions from the drawing. A shelf that looks sufficient in an elevation may be too shallow for a particular bag, and a narrow drawer may waste space beside its runners. Ask the supplier for usable internal dimensions, not only the overall cabinet size.

Give each person a daily zone

Allocate reachable space according to what each person uses most. This may produce an asymmetric interior behind a calm external arrangement. Keep frequently used clothing visible and accessible without moving another person's possessions.

Agree which areas are shared, such as luggage shelves or spare bedding storage. Labelling these in the design brief prevents a useful compartment from becoming unassigned overflow. The division can be reviewed later if working patterns or clothing needs change.

Match access to the door system

Hinged doors provide a different opening from sliding doors. Draw which drawers can open when each door is in use and whether handles collide with adjacent furniture. Do not assume that a symmetrical external design gives equal access to every internal section.

Check the bedroom floor plan as well as the wardrobe elevation. A chair, bed corner or rug can affect movement in front of the cabinet. The wardrobe is functioning furniture, so its operating area belongs in the room plan.

Make drawers and shelves easy to manage

Use shallow storage for small accessories where it helps prevent items being buried. Adjustable shelves can accommodate changing contents, while very deep shelves may need baskets or dividers to keep the back accessible.

Consider the effort required to clean the cabinet and retrieve occasional items. Heavy objects should have a suitable, accessible location. If integrated lighting is proposed, plan its power supply and maintenance access with the installer; hidden equipment still needs to be reachable.

Specify the interior as carefully as the finish

Ask the quotation to identify hardware, shelf construction, drawer configuration and installation details. Compare what is included behind the doors, not simply the colour of the fronts. Obtain samples of the finishes that will touch clothing and be cleaned regularly.

At handover, open every drawer and door with the final handles fitted. Check alignment, smooth operation and any lighting. Keep the drawings and hardware information so replacements or adjustments can be discussed accurately in the future.

Common questions

Should shared wardrobe space be divided exactly in half?

Only if that suits the contents and users. Allocate usable space according to daily needs, then agree a separate shared area for occasional belongings. Equal external doors can conceal different internal arrangements.

Can an existing wardrobe be improved?

Often, removable organisers or adjusted shelves can help. Structural changes, new drawers or lighting depend on the existing construction. Have the cabinet assessed before ordering components that assume a different internal depth or support system.
